How to: Hidden zipper

In this tutorial we will show you how to create the perfect hidden zipper.

V tomto tutoriáli vám predvedieme ako ušiť skrytý zips.

For this tutorial you will need:

a hidden zipper
your skirt, trousers, dress or piece of fabric you want to learn with.

Pre tento tutoriál budete potrebovať:

skrytý zips
vašu sukňu, nohavice šaty alebo akýkoľvek kus látky s ktorým budete pracovať.

First thing, find on which side your hidden zipper is going to be. It should end up being on the left side of your piece of clothing, I will call it a skirt from now on.

Najprv definujte na ktorú stranu má ísť skrytý zips. Normálne sa umiestňujú na ľavú stranu.

Place the zipper on the front side of fabric, the more colorful one, the one which is showed. The zipper should be bottom up, make sure it is.

Uložte zips na líce látky, teda na prednú stranu, spodnou stranou dolu.

Set it to the edge of the piece, I started with front piece of skirt, so I narrowed it along the right edge.

Uložte ho na okraj látky, ja som začala s predným dielom takže som ho uložila k pravému okraju.

Watch out for the length of the zipper mine was too long so I made it hanging out and it the end I cut it. Do not cut it right away!! Wait until the very end, before sewing the waistband.

Dávajte pozor na dĺžku zipsu, môj bol príliš dlhý takže som ho nechala visieť voľne. Neodstrihávajte ho hneď ak bude pridlhý ale až úplne v poslednej chvíli pri prišívaní pásika.

But normally you should have it at least 2 centimetres out like in the picture below.

Normálne by mal pretŕčať asi o dva centimetre.

You can use pins to make it still or baste it. I preffer bating it since the fabric can be slippery and I am more sure about sewing it that way. But if you are really confident you can just pin it up and dont baste it, even though I recommend you not to.

Zips môžte prišpendlíkovať ak veríte svojim schopnostiam ale odporúčam ho prifercovať, hlavne pri klzkých látkach.

For sewing the hidden zipper you need special presser foot for hidden zippers. These are included in sewing machine basics, but if you don't have any you can buy them.

Mine was included and looks like this:

Pre prišívanie skrytého zipsu existuje špeciálna patka, ktorá býva bežne pribalená k stroju ale ak ju nemáte nemal by byť problém ju kúpiť.

Moja bola súčasťou stroja a vyzerá takto:

The zipper goues through the tunnel in the presser foot narrowing itself down and the needle stitches next to the zipper, making in the conclusion the zipper almost invisible. There are other types of presser foots but the principle is the same. The presser narrows the zipper and makes sure the needle runs next to it.

Zips prechádza špeciálnym tunelom, ktorý ho vyrovná a ihla potom šije tesne popri zipse. Existujú aj ďalšie druhy patiek ale princíp použitia ostáva rovnaký.

It is crittical to learn how to use this presser so the stitches next to the zipper are in narrow line and no curves or bumps are created, otherwise the zipper wil keep getting stuck. Watch out for slippery fabrics!!

Je dôležité naučiť sa používať túto patku, hlavne pri klzkých látkach pretože sa môžu vytvoriť nerovné stehy a tie potom spôsobia, že sa zips bude zasekávať.

Once you've done one side, turn the zipper to the other and narrow it down to the other piece of skirt and baste it. It should look like one the pictures below. Don't forget that the zipper goes to the front side of fabric, plus the fabrics always goes front side to front side.

Keď máte jednu stranu hotovú prifercujte zips na druhej strane pričom dávajte pozor aby išlo líce k lícu.

If you turn it around it should look like this.
Keď ho potom otočíte mal by vyzerať takto.

Once you have basted it, sew it on and watch out for the needle to be on the right side of zipper (right as the good, optimal side), so it won't be sewing through the zipper teeth. In the end you have perfectly sewed zipper.

Keď ho máte prifercovaný prišite ho. Dávajte pozor na to kadiaľ šije ihla, aby šila po správnej strane a nezlomila sa na zúbkoch zipsu. Výsledkom je perfektne ušitý skrytý zips.

It is good to press it in the end.

Na záver sa zips zvykne prežehliť aby vyzeral lepšie.

How to: Darts

In this tutorial we will show you how to sew darts from our floral skirt, along with showing how to create simple classical dart.
V tomto tutoriáli si ukážeme na našej kvetinovej sukni ako vyrobiť záševky pre túto sukňu, rovnako ako základy potrebne k ušitiu záševkov.

Darts are a V shaped, tapered adjustment (usually a fold on the inside of the piece) to a pattern to allow for more fullness in the bust area or less fullness in other areas (waist) (from http://www.thesewingdictionary.com/ ).

Záševky sú zakreslené často na okraji strihu občas aj na iných pozíciách. Tieto značky slúžia pre zúženie určitej časti výsledného produktu, napríklad oblasti brucha pri košeli alebo zúženie vrchu sukne alebo nohavíc.

The first thing

Always create darts the first thing after cutting. It is much easier to mark and create the darts on narrow surfaces.

Dbajte na to aby ste záševky kreslili na látku a zašívali ako prvé, pretože sa jednoduchšie pracuje s rovnou látkou.

Mark them

Mark the darts with pins based on lines marked on the paper design.

Označte si polohu záševkov pomocou špendlíkov.

For the marks you can use chalk or if you have white or light fabric you can use special pencils for marking or use classical pencil as i did.

Na značenie môžte použiť kriedu alebo ak máte svetlú látku tak ceruzku, postačí aj obyčajná.

When you mark the lines on one side remove thew pins and pin them on the other side. Then remove the paper from fabric and mark the lines on the other side.

Keď poznačíte značky na jednej strane vyberte špendlíky, prešpendlite ich na opačnú stranu podľa značiek definovaných na látke, odstráňte papierový strih a poznačte si aj druhú stranu.

Baste them

Then you get the two lines that are on the edges and bind them together. You can baste them together if you want, I allways do that just for sure.

Vezmete dve okrajové čiary, ak sú iba dve tak tie, a spojíte ich. Odporúča sa ich aj sfercovať spolu aby lepšie držali.

Sew them

Then you sew the dart going through one of the lines.

Potom zošijete záševok pričom strojom prešívate po jednej z čiar.

I measured mine to be 3 centimetres long, this is a special case of dart, normally you wont have to do this.
Merala som si moje aby boli 3 centimetre dlhé, toto sú špeciálne záševky, pri klasických je dĺžka definovaná už pri kreslení záševku.

And after that you press the dart and you're done. Hope this article was helpfull.

A nakoniec záševok prežehlíte a máte hotovo.

How to: Pleated skirt paper design

We will show you how to create the paper design for pleated skirt.
Ukážeme si ako vytvoriť papierový strih pre skladanú sukňu.

At first get the design paper, cut as much as you think you might need. It is good thing to iron it first lightly, so the paper wont roll.
Najprv si odstrihnite toľko strihového papiera koľko si myslíte, že budete potrebovať. Je dobré najprv papier prežehliť aby sa neroloval.

What to do?

The main part of the design are the darts. We decided to have four darts on the front piece and four on the back piece. Darts look like the one on the picture below. I made mine to be 3 centimeters long, but you can make them as long as you personally want, just make sure that they are all equally long.

Najdôležitejšia časť tohto strihu sú záševky, ja som si ich vytvorila 3 centimetre dlhé ale vy si môžte vyrobiť akokoľvek dlhé chcete. Len sa uistite, že všetky budú rovnakej dĺžky.

For the design creation you need to measure your waist. Then you divide it into two halves, first will be the front part and the second the back part. This design is for my waist - 72 cm wide, so after folding this one half will be 18 centimeters wide.If you have smaller or bigger waist adjust the design to your specific waist.

Pre vytvorenie strihu si musíte odmerať dĺžku pásu. Túto potom predelíte na dve časti, jedna časť bude predný diel a druhá zadný diel.Tento návrh je pre 72 centimetrový pás, takže po poskladaní bude táto polovica predného dielu dlhá 18 centimetrov. Ak je váš pás menší alebo väčší upravte si ho podľa vašej odmeranej veľkosti.

The front side is divided in two and when you cut it out, you add the right side to the edge of fabric where it is folded.

Predný diel je rozdelený na dve časti a pri vystrihovaní sa pravá strana priloží na okrej látky, kde je látka prehnutá.

After creating the paper design you should try and fold it and measure it.

Po vytvorení papierového strihu si skúste poskladať strih a zmerať si, či ste ho správne nakreslili.

For the back, we created almost the same design. Only difference was with the right edge, since we divided the back side in two different parts and sewed it in the center. So when you will be adding 1 centimeter for sew allowance dont forget to add 1 centimeter on the right side too.

Zadný diel vyzerá v podstate rovnako ako predný, ale rozdelili sme ho na dve časti, ktoré budeme zošívať spolu, takže nezabudnite pridať centimeter na pravý okraj rovnako ako na ostatné strany.

After creating both the designs it is good to curve the upper part of the design since people normally are more roundish:)

Po vytvorení obidvoch je dobré trošku zaobliť vrch sukne.

For creating this you just measure about 1 or 2 centimeters from the edge of design and create a line from that point to the edge. Mine is about 10 centimeters long. You can create it as long as you want, just make sure that every one of them is the same length as the others.
Aby sme vytvorili toto zaoblenie odmeriame asi 1 alebo 2 centimetre od okraja strihu a spravíme čiaru z odmeraného bodu až ku okraju. Môže byť akokoľvek dlhá, moja je 10 centimetrov dlhá, nech si ju spravíte akokoľvek dlhú ubezpečte sa, že všetky sú rovnako dlhé.

That would be it, dont forget to add 1 centimeter for seam allowance and fold the paper design to make sure it has the right size.

To by bolo všetko nezabudnite pridať centimeter na okrajoch aby ste mali ako zošiť jednotlivé diely.

When you add the seam allowance on the paper design you can move the pieces to each ther closely saving place on fabric.

Keď pridáte centimeter na zošívanie už na papieri, môžte poukladať strih na látku bližšie k sebe a ušetriť tým látku.

For the first DYI (Do It Yourself) article we will be creating the floral skirt I wore in my latest outfit post.

V rámci prvého "urob si sám" článku budeme vyrábať kvetinovú sukňu, ktorú ste mohli vidieť v predošlom outfit článku.

There are few simple steps on creating the skirt which we will be covering. If you are a complete beginner, and you don't know how to do all of the steps, don't worry we will do more how to articles covering the basics.

Create the paper design for the skirt.
Pin the paper design on the fabric and cut out the skirt
Sew the darts.
Sew in the hidden zipper
Sew the front and back piece together.
Add the waistband.
Clean finnish the bottom of the skirt.

Pre vytvorenie sukne existuje niekoľko jednoduchých krokov, ktoré si definujeme a neskôr v článku dôkladnejšie rozoberieme.

Vytvorte si papierový strih.
Prišpendlite strih na látku a vystrihnite sukňu.
Zašite záševky
Všite skrytý zips.
Zošite spolu predný a zadný diel.
Prišite pásik.
Zahnite spodnú časť.

Create the paper design for the skirt

To create a paper design you can either use those pre made from sewing magazines or you can print it from the internet or you can do one for yourself.

Pre vytvorenie papierového strihu môžte použiť kúpený strih z rôznych špecializovaných časopisov alebo si môžte strih vytlačiť z internetu alebo si ho môžte vytvoriť sami.

With this skirt I tried creating my own desing because I knew really specifically what I want to create. I created the so called drindl skirt or some call it pleated skirt. Mine is 45 centimeters long so that it will be from waist to knees.

Pri tejto sukni som si vytvárala vlastný strih pretože som presne vedela akú sukňu chcem. Vytvorila som si skladanú sukňu s dĺžkou 45 centimetrov takže bude od pása až po kolená.

Pin the paper design on the fabric and cut out the skirt

Don't forget to prewash the farbic first.

Also, watch out for seam allowance, if you didn't add it on the paper add it on the fabric and then cut it.

Watch out for those arrows, which defines the way to narrow the design on the fabric. The arrow should allways be paralles to one of the edges of fabric. If you don't know what I'm talking about find the word Grain in the sewing dictionary.

Nezabudnite látku najprv vyprať aby sa nezrazila pri ďalšom praní.

Tiež nezabudnite pridať jeden centimeter na zašitie, ak ste to neurobili už na papier dokreslite si nové okraje na látku.

Posledná vec, pozrite si aby vám šípky išli paralelne s okrajom látky.

Sew the darts

Jednoduchý záševkový tutoriál môžte násť TU.

Darts on this skirt are very specific.

Záševky na tejto sukni sú veľmi špecifické.

They contain from three lines. The two lines on the edges are sewed together in the way that the center line ends up in center. You then press the fabric in the way that the center line stays at the center as it is showed on the pictures below.

Pozostávajú z troch čiar, pričom dve okrajové čiary sa zošívajú spolu. Látka sa potom prežehlí tak, že stredná čiara ostáva v strede švu.

These were on the front. On the back we had different type of darts, they also consists from three lines and you sew the two edge lines together. The difference is on the pressing. With the first one you press so that the fabric is layed equally on both sides of the line.

With this second one you press it on one side, so the center line will not lay in the center of sew.

Teraz spomínané záševky sú na predku sukne. V zadu sme vytvorili iné. Zadné záševky taktiež pozostávajú z troch čiar a zošívajú sa dve okrajové, avšak sú zažehlené do boku a nie na stred ako predné záševky.

It will lay on one side of the sewing. We pressed it in the way that the crease will be facing on the opposite direction from the center of back part of skirt. You can do it however you want, I like it more this way because it crumples less.

Zažehlili sme ich tak aby smerovali od stredu zadného dielu. Takýto spôsob pomáha aby sa sukňa menej krčila avšak je na vašom vlastnom výbere ako chcete aby sukňa vyzerala.

Here you can see that the two parts of back part are pressed in the way that the crimples are facing in opposited direction than on the other side.

Na obrázku je vidno ze záševky na jednej strane sú zažehlené oproti tým na druhej strane sukne.

Sew in the hidden zipper

It is good to sew the zipper befor sewing the sides of skirt. For this skirt you need a zipper at about 20 centimeters long, mine was longer so I had to cut it, I picked white one so it won't be so visible.

Je dobrým zvykom prišiť najprv zips až potom zošívať kraje. Pre túto dĺžku sukne treba 20 centimetrový zips, môj bol dlhší takže som ho musela skracovať. Vybrala som si biely aby nebol viditeľný.

Sew the sides of skirt

Remember to always try it on before sewing it with sewing machine. You might need to make it tighter or ease it a bit.

Zošite boky, pričom najprv zfercujte sukňu a vyskúšajte si ju ak by ste museli pridávať uberať a až potom zošívajte na stroji.

Add the waistband

Create the waistband, remember to add extre centimeters to your waist measurement, since you need the ends to overlap. Sew on the button hole on one end and then the button on the other.

Prišite pásik, nezabudnite pri vystrihovaní pridať navyše niekoľko centimetrov aby sa vám oba konce prekrývali. Našite gombíkovú dierku a na druhý koniec gombík.

Clean finnish the bottom

Clean finnish the bottom. You can either zigzag it and leave it like that if you want, or you can run it with overlock or you can zigzag it and bend it and then stich through it or glue it with that special sticky band, or create a rolled hem as I did, which is defined in the dictionary as: Often a feature of a high end serger. it can also be done by hand with a folding technique - fold, fold again, fold again, and stitch through the rolled hem you have created.

Zkončite spodok, pričom môžte použiť viacero techník. Na mojej sukni som vytvorila rolku, teda som dvakrát zahla látku aby nebolo vidno okraj a tak som ju prešila.
