In this article we will show you how to clear the bottom of a skirt, pants or dresses. We will explain the basics of creating the rolled hem.

The rolled hem needs extra 2 centimeters added to the original pattern for seam allowance. It is prettiest and easiest thing to do with hems, since it hides the edge of a garment completely and gives the skirt professional look.

Baste it

As usual the first thing is baste it. We create a roll from the fabric and then baste it down and sew it.
To create a roll take the edge of skirt and fold it once. The folding should be about one centimeter wide. If you are not confident enough you can baste it in this part, but it is not necesary.

Then take the folded edge and fold it second time. The edge will be completely hidden inside of the roll this way.

This is the time where you should baste it so it won't slip away. Make that roll around the edge and make sure that the hem will be 1 centimeter wide everywhere.

Once you have the rolled edge done around the whole edge sew it. Watch out for the needle to go closer to the rolled edge not the edge of actual skirt.

Tip:
If your hem has not the same width everywhere do not copy hem's edge but sew along the carf that is on your sewing machine. Set the fabric to go along the 1 centimeter carf and move it along, so that the stitches will be in the narrow line.

Hope this one helped,
Sincerely,
